Early Life and Inspirations of John Bayes, Green Bodhi

Born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, John Bayes has maintained close ties to the culture from a young age. As a young adult, he explored diverse career paths but ultimately discovered a profound interest in esoteric studies and psychedelic self-discovery. This unique fascination ignited a deep-seated desire to delve into the medicinal properties of plants within a more traditional, lineage-based framework. In 2004, after extensive personal exploration, Bayes embarked on a transformative journey to Peru, where he sought to immerse himself in the wisdom traditions of plants from the jungles and highlands of this sacred land.

During his time in Iquitos, Bayes attended the first International Shamanic Conference, an event that marked his initial encounter with his first mentor, Sayre Tupac Waricocia. Coincidentally, this period also marked Bayes’ initial engagement with deeper Buddhist traditions and philosophical studies. Sayre Tupac, a Neo-Style teacher, blended elements of Buddhist psychology, philosophy, and practices with quantum physics and Andean plant wisdom. Sayre’s own Buddhist training, acquired within the Karma Kagyu lineage in India, together with his expertise in Peruvian wisdom plants and sacred Incan heritage, laid the foundation for a lifelong bond with Bayes. To this day, Bayes continues his studies and training in Buddhist traditions under the guidance of the Namgyal Monastery.
