Hello everyone, it’s MrSoul from Brothers Grimm Seeds, here to talk about storing your seeds. Quite often I get growers emailing me to ask about how to store their seeds.
“How long are you keeping them?” is usually what I ask them in response.
Here’s the deal – it depends on how long you are keeping your seeds and when you’re going to germinate them to determine the best way to store them.
How long do seeds last?
As nature would have it, seeds last a reasonable amount of time without a lot of extra care. So if you’re planning on planting your seeds within a year or two years, they’re going to be fine if you keep them in the package you bought them in. You can put your seeds in a sock drawer, cupboard, or wherever. If you have room in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer, then you can put seeds there.
Long term seed storage:
For long term seed storage, such as 5 years or more, you definitely want to store them in the refrigerator, specifically the crisper drawer. Don’t take them in and out.
For more than 10 years, you should use the freezer. When you put seeds in a refrigerator crisper or freezer, don’t keep them in the package you bought them in. Instead, put them in an opaque (dark) container so light doesn’t penetrate and get through it. It’s a good idea to use desiccant packs as well.
When you’re storing seeds for 10 years or more, don’t take them in and out of the freezer.
